Your 8.25% EPF Interest Was Credited in July — So Why Doesn’t Your Passbook Show It?
EPFO credited 8.25% interest for 2025-26 to about 34 crore accounts by July 15, 2026, its fastest annual credit in recent years. If your passbook still shows nothing, the reason is usually in your account, not in the system.
Every year the same question returns: the rate has been announced, so when does the money actually show up? For 2025-26, the answer has already arrived. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation finished crediting 8.25% interest to roughly 34 crore member accounts by July 15, 2026, months earlier than it managed in several previous years.
Yet many people searching in October still cannot see the credit. Some are looking in the wrong place, some have accounts that EPFO’s system skipped, and some are not covered by EPFO’s credit at all because their employer runs its own provident fund trust. This article explains how to tell which group you are in, and what to do about it.
A ₹1.44 Lakh Crore Credit, Done in One Go
The scale of the EPF is easy to underestimate. Business Today, reporting on the July credit, put EPFO’s total assets at around ₹32 lakh crore and its member accounts at nearly 35 crore, of which about 8 crore are active contributing accounts. Most of the rest are older accounts from previous jobs that still earn interest.
Crediting interest to every one of them has historically been slow. Earlier years’ credits stretched into September or even November, according to the same report. For 2025-26, EPFO calculated interest on July 1 and 2, verified balances, and posted the credit to about 34 crore accounts by July 15, which Angel One reported as the first time annual interest was credited to all eligible accounts in a single batch.
The early credit was possible because EPFO moved 123 regional databases onto a single national platform, called CITES in reports, which merged about 1,700 crore records. With one database rather than 123, interest could be calculated and posted centrally instead of office by office.
From Board Meeting to Your Passbook: The 2025-26 Journey
An EPF interest credit always goes through the same four gates. The board recommends a rate, the Finance Ministry agrees, the Labour Ministry notifies it, and EPFO credits it. For 2025-26, the whole journey from board decision to credit took about four and a half months.
The 2024-25 cycle was similarly quick. On July 8, 2025, Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said interest had been credited to over 96% of members, or 32.40 crore accounts, as reported by News On AIR. The difference in 2026 is that EPFO says it credited all eligible accounts in a single batch.
Third Year at 8.25%: How the Rate Has Moved
8.25% matches the rate for 2023-24 and 2024-25. It is above the 8.10% of 2021-22, which ETV Bharat described as the lowest since 1977-78, but below the 8.5% to 8.8% range of the mid-2010s.
Even small changes in the rate matter on large balances. The table shows the annual interest on a steady balance at the three most recent rates. A balance that earned 8.10% in 2021-22 now earns 0.15 percentage points more.
| Balance for the full year | At 8.10% | At 8.15% | At 8.25% | Gain vs 8.10% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹1 lakh | ₹8,100 | ₹8,150 | ₹8,250 | ₹150 |
| ₹5 lakh | ₹40,500 | ₹40,750 | ₹41,250 | ₹750 |
| ₹10 lakh | ₹81,000 | ₹81,500 | ₹82,500 | ₹1,500 |
| ₹25 lakh | ₹2,02,500 | ₹2,03,750 | ₹2,06,250 | ₹3,750 |
| ₹50 lakh | ₹4,05,000 | ₹4,07,500 | ₹4,12,500 | ₹7,500 |
How EPFO Actually Works Out Your Interest
EPF interest is not calculated on your year-end balance. It is calculated on your monthly running balance: the balance at the end of each month earns one-twelfth of the annual rate, and the twelve amounts are added up and credited once, after the financial year closes. That is why interest for April 2025 to March 2026 only appears in mid-2026.
Two consequences follow. Contributions made late in the year earn very little interest for that year, because they sit in the account for only a month or two. And money you withdraw stops earning from the month it leaves. The amount in the employer’s pension share, the Employees’ Pension Scheme, does not earn EPF interest at all; it funds a pension rather than a balance.
What people often get wrong is checking the credit against their year-end balance. Because interest uses the running balance, the credit will always look smaller than 8.25% of the closing figure if you contributed during the year. That gap is normal, not an error.
Six Reasons the Credit Is Missing From Your Passbook
If EPFO credited 34 crore accounts in July and yours is not one of them, the cause is usually specific to your account. Business Today noted that incomplete KYC, especially an outdated Aadhaar-linked mobile number, is a common reason for delays. This decoder covers the situations members most often meet.
| What you see | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No interest line for 2025-26 | Passbook not refreshed, or KYC mismatch held the account back | Log in again; update Aadhaar, PAN and mobile in KYC |
| Interest on one account, not another | Multiple UANs or old member IDs not merged | Transfer old balances to your current UAN |
| Balance recently moved | Transfer in progress when interest was posted | Wait for the transfer to complete, then recheck |
| Passbook not available online | Employer runs an exempted PF trust | Ask the trust or HR for its interest credit date |
| Interest smaller than expected | Monthly running-balance method or mid-year withdrawal | Recalculate month by month, as in the example |
| Account shows inoperative | No contributions for a long period after leaving service | Check status; claim or transfer the balance |
The exempted trust exception
Some large employers run their own provident fund trusts with EPFO’s permission. These trusts manage the money and credit interest themselves, and they must pay at least the EPFO rate. But EPFO’s July batch does not cover them, and their passbooks often do not appear on EPFO’s portal. If you work for such an employer, your HR or PF trust is the place to ask.
How to Check Whether Your Interest Has Arrived
There are four standard ways to check. The passbook gives the most detail; SMS and missed call give a quick balance.
When Your EPF Interest Becomes Taxable
For most members, EPF interest is tax-free. The exception is for high contributors. Since 2021, interest on employee contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year is taxable; the limit rises to ₹5 lakh a year where the employer does not contribute. The interest on contributions up to that limit, and on the employer’s share, stays tax-exempt within the usual rules.
For someone earning a basic salary of ₹30,000 a month, the employee contribution is ₹43,200 a year, far below the limit. The rule mainly affects high earners and those making large voluntary contributions through the Voluntary Provident Fund. If it applies to you, EPFO maintains taxable and non-taxable portions separately, and TDS may be deducted on the taxable interest.
| Basic pay a month | Your EPF contribution a year | Above ₹2.5 lakh limit? | Interest taxable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹15,000 | ₹21,600 | No | No |
| ₹30,000 | ₹43,200 | No | No |
| ₹1,00,000 | ₹1,44,000 | No | No |
| ₹1,80,000 | ₹2,59,200 | Yes, by ₹9,200 | Only on interest from the excess |
| ₹2,50,000 | ₹3,60,000 | Yes, by ₹1,10,000 | Only on interest from the excess |
Why 8.25% Still Beats Most Safe Alternatives
A rate held flat for three years can look unexciting. Set against other low-risk options, it is not. In October 2026, ICICI Bank’s best general fixed deposit rate was 6.60%, for 3 years 1 day to 5 years, even after a fresh increase that followed RBI’s repo rate rise to 5.50%. The bigger difference is tax.
FD interest is taxed at your slab rate every year. For a saver in the 30% slab under the new tax regime, a 6.60% five-year FD yields about 4.74% after tax, by our calculation. EPF interest, for most members contributing below the ₹2.5 lakh limit, is tax-free. So the 8.25% you see is, for most people, the 8.25% you keep, nearly 3.5 percentage points more than that FD after tax.
The trade-off is access, not return
EPF money is meant for retirement. Partial withdrawals are allowed only for specified purposes, and the full balance is generally available on retirement or after leaving employment, subject to the scheme’s rules. That illiquidity is the price of the higher, tax-free return. It is also why it is worth leaving old balances to compound rather than withdrawing them every time you change jobs: a transfer keeps the money earning 8.25%, while a withdrawal stops it.
Why earlier years were slower
Before the database migration, each regional office worked out and posted interest for its own accounts. Any office with data problems held back its members, which is why credits for some earlier years stretched into September or November. With one national database, the 2025-26 credit was calculated and posted centrally in about two weeks after the migration ended.
If It’s Still Missing: An Escalation Path
If KYC is complete, your UANs are merged, you are not in an exempted trust, and the interest is still missing, raise it formally.
- Recheck the passbook for each member ID linked to your UAN, not just the current one.
- Complete KYC on the member portal: Aadhaar, PAN, bank account and an up-to-date mobile number.
- Merge old accounts by filing an online transfer request for previous employers’ member IDs.
- Raise a grievance on EPFiGMS, EPFO’s online grievance portal, quoting your UAN and member ID.
- Follow up with your regional PF office if the grievance is not resolved, carrying your passbook printouts.

Frequently Asked Questions
When will 8.25% EPF interest for 2025-26 be credited?
It has already been credited. EPFO completed the credit of 8.25% interest for FY 2025-26 to about 34 crore accounts by July 15, 2026, totalling over ₹1.44 lakh crore. If your passbook does not show it, check KYC, multiple UANs or whether your employer runs an exempted PF trust.
Why is EPF interest not showing in my passbook?
Common reasons include incomplete KYC, an outdated Aadhaar-linked mobile number, old member IDs not merged into your UAN, a transfer in progress, or an employer that runs its own exempted PF trust. EPFO says interest continues to accrue until credited, so you do not lose money because of the delay.
What is the EPF interest rate for 2025-26?
The EPF interest rate for 2025-26 is 8.25%. EPFO’s Central Board of Trustees fixed it on March 2, 2026, and the government ratified it in June 2026. It is the third consecutive year at 8.25%.
How is EPF interest calculated?
Interest is calculated on your monthly running balance at one-twelfth of the annual rate, and the total is credited once after the financial year ends. Contributions made during the year earn interest only for the remaining months, so the credit is smaller than 8.25% of your year-end balance.
How can I check my EPF balance and interest?
Use the EPFO Member Passbook portal with your UAN and OTP, the UMANG app, an SMS of “EPFOHO UAN” to 7738299899, or a missed call from your registered mobile. The passbook shows the interest entry separately for the employee and employer shares.
Is EPF interest taxable?
EPF interest is generally tax-free, but interest on employee contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year is taxable, or above ₹5 lakh where the employer does not contribute. Most salaried employees contribute well below this limit.
Do I get interest on my EPF if I have left my job?
Balances in accounts from previous jobs continue to earn interest, but accounts can become inoperative after a long period without contributions following exit from service. Transferring old balances into your current UAN keeps them active and easier to track.
When will the EPF interest rate for 2026-27 be announced?
EPFO’s Central Board of Trustees usually decides the next year’s rate in February or March, followed by government ratification. No decision has been announced for 2026-27 yet, and the rate cannot be predicted in advance.
The Short Version
The 8.25% EPF interest for 2025-26 is not pending. EPFO’s board fixed it on March 2, 2026, the government ratified it in June, and EPFO credited it to about 34 crore accounts by July 15, 2026, totalling over ₹1.44 lakh crore. Interest is calculated on your monthly running balance, so the credit is smaller than 8.25% of your year-end balance if you contributed during the year. If your passbook still shows nothing, fix KYC, merge old UANs, and check whether your employer runs its own PF trust. Interest keeps accruing until credited.
