Union Bank 555-day
Cut from 6.65% today.
Union Bank of India repriced today. Its whole domestic card was revised with effect from 4 August 2026 — the 555-day peak fell to 6.55% from 6.65% and the 444-day special to 6.50%. Every rate comparison site still shows the old numbers. If you were quoted a Union rate last week, it no longer applies.
How to read the verification labels. A panel marked Verified 4 Aug 2026 carries a complete tenure grid read directly off that lender's rate page today. A panel marked Peak verified, chart pending carries the highest rate we can stand behind, sourced and dated, while the full grid is still being confirmed against the official card. We don't publish tenure rows we haven't checked — a wrong row on this page sends someone to a branch to book the wrong deposit.

Deposit insurance

DICGC covers ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, principal and interest combined. Branches of one bank are pooled. NBFC and HFC deposits get no cover.

TDS thresholds

Banks deduct 10% once yearly interest passes ₹50,000, or ₹1 lakh for seniors. Bajaj Finance deducts from just ₹5,000. No PAN means 20%.

Form 15G and 15H

File 15G under 60 or 15H at 60 and above, at the start of each financial year, if total income is below the taxable limit. It stops the deduction, not the tax.

Section 80C deposits

Five-year tax saver FDs count toward the ₹1.5 lakh limit. No early withdrawal, no loan against them, and interest is taxed in full each year.

Questions we get asked

Why do some banks have full charts and others don't?
Because we only publish tenure rows we've read off the lender's own rate page. Banks running the older government content systems — PNB, Union Bank and most public sector peers — serve their tables as plain text, so those resolve quickly. The private banks and small finance banks build their rate tables in JavaScript, which means the page returns navigation markup and no numbers. For those we're locating the underlying rate PDFs. Until then you get the peak rate, dated and sourced, rather than a plausible-looking grid we guessed at.
Which bank pays the most right now?
Suryoday and Utkarsh Small Finance Banks at 8.10% for general depositors, on a 30-month and 666-day deposit respectively. Unity SFB advertises 8.50% on a 501-day deposit, which rests on a single source and is worth confirming with the bank directly. All three are DICGC-insured. Bear in mind these are special tenures — Utkarsh's one-year rate is around 6.00%, so the headline is not the shape of the card.
Is PNB's 444-day deposit still at 6.60%?
Yes. PNB reissued its whole retail card on 1 June 2026 and the 444-day bucket held at 6.60% general, 7.10% senior and 7.40% super senior. Some aggregators list PNB's peak as 6.40% on the 390-day slab, which is out of date — the bank's own page shows 6.30% there. The June reissue also added a 666-day bucket at 6.50% and lifted the three-to-five-year band by 25 bps.
What changed at Union Bank today?
The entire domestic and NRO card was revised with effect from 4 August 2026, and it moved down. The 555-day peak fell to 6.55% from 6.65%, the 444-day special to 6.50%, and the shortest bucket now pays 2.70%. Union's genuinely highest general rate isn't on the callable card at all — it's 6.80% on the 444-day non-callable deposit for amounts above ₹1 crore, which cannot be broken early.
Should I lock in now or wait?
Nobody can tell you what the MPC decides on 5 August, but the consensus among bank economists is another hold at 5.25%, with the rate possibly frozen through the rest of 2026. If that's right, waiting doesn't buy a better rate — and Union Bank cutting today is a reminder that the risk currently runs the other way. The usual approach is a ladder across one, two and three-year deposits so something matures each year. This is general information, not advice about your situation.
