Auto Sweep vs Liquid Fund vs Overnight Fund: Where Should Idle Cash Sit After the RBI’s October Hike?
SBI’s savings rate is 2.50% while liquid funds yield about 6.44% and overnight funds about 5.2%. Which one wins depends on when you need the money and your tax slab.
Most households keep more money in a savings account than they need for the month. A bonus that has not found a home yet, an emergency fund, a down payment waiting for the right flat, a tax payment due in March. At SBI that balance earns 2.50% a year. The RBI raised the repo rate to 5.50% on 7 October 2026, and short-term market rates have moved above 6% for some instruments. That gap is what auto sweep deposits, liquid funds and overnight funds all try to capture, in very different ways.
Why idle cash suddenly has a better price
For most of 2025, the RBI was cutting rates and banks followed by trimming what they paid savers. SBI cut its savings rate to 2.50% for all balances from 15 June 2025, and HDFC Bank moved to 2.75% the same month, according to Outlook Money. Fixed deposit rates fell with them.
October 2026 reversed the direction. The Monetary Policy Committee raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% and changed its stance to “calibrated tightening”, with the standing deposit facility at 5.25% and the marginal standing facility at 5.75%. Its own projection puts inflation at 6.0% in the October to December quarter. The next meeting is scheduled for 2 to 4 December 2026.

- 6.59%3-month commercial paper rate, same day
- 7.74%1-year certificate of deposit rate, same day
- 6.0%RBI’s projected CPI inflation for Q3 2026-27
Those market figures come from Aditya Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund’s daily fixed income tracker for 12 October. Overnight funds buy one-day lending at roughly the TREPS rate; liquid funds buy certificates of deposit and commercial paper maturing within 91 days.
Three products that sound alike but work nothing alike
- Auto sweep (sweep-in FD)Bank depositBalance above a set threshold moves into a fixed deposit linked to your savings account. SBI’s threshold under its Multi Option Deposit scheme is ₹50,000, raised from ₹35,000 in September 2025, with sweeps in units of ₹1,000.
- Liquid fundUp to 91 daysA debt mutual fund that may only hold instruments maturing within 91 days, mostly certificates of deposit, commercial paper and treasury bills. Average maturity at Tata Liquid Fund was 53 days on 30 September 2026.
- Overnight fund1 dayA debt fund that lends only overnight, mainly through TREPS and reverse repo. Average maturity is 1 day, so there is almost no credit or interest-rate risk, and the yield tracks the overnight rate.
The insurance line that separates them
Your sweep deposit is a bank deposit, so it is covered by DICGC deposit insurance up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, including interest. Liquid and overnight funds are not deposits and carry no insurance or guarantee. Their safety comes from what they hold. Overnight funds are about as close to risk-free as a mutual fund gets. Liquid funds take a small amount of credit risk on corporate paper, which is why they yield more.
The yield ladder from savings account to commercial paper
% a year. SBI rates from Upstox (9 Oct 2026); fund yields from Tata MF factsheets (30 Sep 2026); market rates from ABSLMF tracker (12 Oct 2026).
Both fund yields were recorded on 30 September, before the hike. With TREPS at 5.33% after the decision, overnight fund yields should drift toward that level, minus expenses, while liquid funds reprice as their 53-day paper matures.
How auto sweep really pays you, and when it doesn’t
Auto sweep sounds like the perfect product: savings account access with FD interest. The catch lies in the rate you actually get when the deposit is broken. A sweep FD earns the card rate for its tenure only if it runs to maturity. When your savings balance runs short, the bank breaks the sweep deposit, usually in units of ₹1,000, and pays interest for the period it actually ran, at the rate for that shorter period, often minus a premature withdrawal penalty.
- ₹50,000ThresholdBalance above SBI’s limit becomes eligible for sweep.
- ₹1,000Sweep unitSurplus moves into the linked deposit in multiples.
- 6.25%Run to maturitySBI’s 1 to 2 year card rate if left untouched.
- 4.90%Broken at 90 daysRepriced to the 46 to 179 day rate, less any penalty.
The repricing is the part most savers never read. If you sweep ₹2.5 lakh into a one-year deposit and pull it back after 90 days, you are paid at the 46 to 179 day rate of 4.90%, less a penalty we assume at 0.50 percentage point. That is about ₹2,700 for the quarter, our calculation. A liquid fund yielding 6.44% would have earned roughly ₹4,000 over the same 90 days, indicative and before tax.
Common mistake: treating auto sweep as a one-year FD. It behaves like one only if the swept money stays put. For a fund you dip into every few weeks, the effective rate can sit far closer to 3% to 5% than to the headline 6.25%.
Liquid funds: the higher yield and its two small frictions
Liquid funds are where most companies park their cash, and the scale shows it. AMFI data for September 2026 puts liquid fund assets at ₹6.26 lakh crore, after a net outflow of ₹95,743 crore in the month, which Angel One’s report attributed to institutional withdrawals.
The seven-day exit load
Since 20 October 2019, SEBI has required liquid funds to charge a small graded exit load on units redeemed within seven days. After day seven, there is no load at all.
Rupees deducted. Graded schedule from SEBI’s 2019 framework as shown in Tata Liquid Fund’s September 2026 factsheet.
Instant redemption has a ceiling
Many liquid funds offer instant redemption, where money reaches your bank within minutes. The cap is the lower of ₹50,000 or 90% of your investment, per scheme per day. Anything above that follows the normal route and is paid on the next business day.
Overnight funds: dull by design
An overnight fund’s job is to never surprise you. Tata Overnight Fund, with ₹5,556 crore of assets, had an average maturity of exactly one day and a yield to maturity of 5.20% on 30 September 2026. Its direct plan returned 5.29% over the previous year, against 5.24% for its CRISIL benchmark. There is no exit load, so a two-day stay costs nothing to leave.
Overnight funds lost ₹7,281 crore of assets in September, ending at ₹84,033 crore across 40 schemes, according to AMFI data reported by Angel One. They suit cash you need within days, or large sums where even small credit risk is unwelcome.
Low cost matters most here. When the whole return is about 5.3%, the expense ratio is a big slice of it. Tata’s overnight direct plan charges 0.05% against 0.16% for the regular plan. On a liquid fund the gap is 0.19% against 0.29%.
The ₹3 lakh test: one year, four homes for the same cash
Take ₹3 lakh of idle money held for one full year. We compare a plain SBI savings account at 2.50%, SBI auto sweep with ₹50,000 left in savings and ₹2.5 lakh swept into a one-year deposit at 6.25% compounded quarterly, Tata Overnight Fund’s direct plan return of 5.29% over the past year, and Tata Liquid Fund’s direct plan return of 6.48%.
Our calculation. Fund figures use the past year’s direct-plan returns, which are not a forecast. Post-tax assumes the 30% slab plus 4% cess (31.2%) and no 80TTA deduction.
What the numbers say. Moving from a savings account to any of the three roughly doubles or more than doubles the return. Between the three, the gaps are smaller: the liquid fund earns about ₹2,200 more than auto sweep in a year, and auto sweep about ₹1,400 more than the overnight fund, before tax.
The auto sweep figure assumes the deposit is never broken. Break it twice in the year and the advantage over the overnight fund can disappear. The liquid fund figure is a past return; next year’s return will follow the yields it buys from now on, currently around 6.44%.
Tax treatment flattens the differences
Since 1 April 2023, gains on debt mutual funds bought from that date are taxed at your slab rate, however long you hold them. That ended the old long-term advantage that once made liquid funds clearly better than FDs for high earners. Interest from savings accounts and sweep deposits is also taxed at your slab rate.
Two differences remain. Mutual fund gains are taxed only when you redeem, so you control the year in which tax falls, while FD interest is taxed as it accrues. And under the old regime, savings account interest up to ₹10,000 a year is deductible under the 80TTA provision, or ₹50,000 for senior citizens on all deposit interest under 80TTB. Sweep FD interest counts as deposit interest for seniors but not toward 80TTA for others.

A decision rule based on when you need the money
Needed within days, or unpredictably
Use an overnight fund or keep it in auto sweep. Neither charges you for short stays, and an overnight fund will not lose value on a bad day in the credit market. For cash that moves every week, auto sweep needs no transfer at all.
Needed in one to six months
A liquid fund is usually the best fit. The exit load disappears after a week, the yield is the highest of the three and the 91-day maturity limit keeps price swings small.
Dates that shaped this choice
- Graded exit load of up to 0.0070% applies to liquid fund units redeemed within 7 days.
- Debt fund gains on new purchases taxed at slab rate regardless of holding period.
- SBI cuts its savings rate to 2.50% for all balances.
- SBI raises its auto sweep threshold to ₹50,000 from ₹35,000.
- Liquid fund assets at ₹6.26 lakh crore after ₹95,743 crore outflow in the month.
- RBI raises repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%.
- TREPS at 5.33%, 3-month CD at 6.51%, 3-month CP at 6.59%.
- Next MPC meeting, which may move short-term yields again.
A parking checklist before you move a rupee
- Keep 1 month of expenses in the savings account itself
- Check your bank’s sweep threshold, ₹50,000 at SBI
- Ask the bank how sweep deposits are broken and what penalty applies
- Keep bank deposits per bank under the ₹5 lakh DICGC limit
- Use direct plans to save 0.10 to 0.11 point a year
- Avoid liquid fund redemptions in the first 7 days
- Remember instant redemption caps at ₹50,000 per scheme per day
- Invest before the 1:30 pm cut-off with funds cleared, to get that day’s rate
- Compare returns after your slab tax, not before
- Recheck yields after the 2 to 4 December MPC meeting
Questions people ask about parking spare cash
Is a liquid fund better than auto sweep?
For money you can leave for more than a week, a liquid fund currently yields more, about 6.44% at Tata Liquid Fund against SBI’s 6.25% one-year rate, and the gap widens if the sweep deposit is broken early. Auto sweep wins on convenience and DICGC insurance for money that moves in and out often.
What is the difference between an overnight fund and a liquid fund?
An overnight fund lends for one day only, mostly through TREPS, so it has almost no credit or price risk and no exit load. A liquid fund holds paper maturing within 91 days, earns a higher yield, and charges a tiny exit load if you redeem within seven days.
Can a liquid fund lose money?
It is rare but possible, because liquid funds hold corporate commercial paper that could be downgraded or default. That is why they yield more than overnight funds. For most well-diversified funds, daily price moves are very small.
How much can I withdraw instantly from a liquid fund?
The lower of ₹50,000 or 90% of your investment, per scheme per day. Larger redemptions are paid on the next business day.
How is auto sweep interest taxed?
It is fixed deposit interest, taxed at your slab rate each year as it accrues. The 80TTA deduction of ₹10,000 under the old regime applies to savings account interest, not sweep FD interest, though senior citizens can claim up to ₹50,000 on all deposit interest under 80TTB.
Are overnight funds safe for an emergency fund?
They are among the safest mutual fund options because they lend overnight against government securities. They are not insured like bank deposits, and money takes a business day to reach you, so keep some cash in your bank account as well.
What is the minimum balance for SBI auto sweep?
SBI sweeps balance above ₹50,000 into its Multi Option Deposit, in units of ₹1,000. The threshold was raised from ₹35,000 in September 2025.
Will the October 2026 repo hike raise returns on these options?
Overnight fund returns should rise quickly because they track the overnight rate, which was 5.33% after the hike. Liquid fund returns adjust over weeks as older paper matures. Savings and FD rates change only when banks revise their rate cards.
The short version for a busy reader
A savings account at 2.50% is the most expensive place to keep spare cash. Auto sweep is the easiest upgrade and keeps DICGC cover, but it only pays FD rates if the swept money stays put. An overnight fund is the safe, steady choice for money you may need any day. A liquid fund pays the most, around 6.44% in yield right now, for money you can leave for a week or longer. Compare after tax, use direct plans, and recheck rates after the December policy meeting.
