Some lenders have gone further, analyzing app usage behavior, social media activity, shopping patterns, and even the time of day you apply for a loan as potential signals of financial character.
In theory, this approach could be transformative. Someone with no formal credit history but a decade of steady utility bill payments and stable employment deserves access to credit. An AI with access to alternative data can potentially see that. It could democratize lending in ways the old scoring model never could.
In practice, however, AI underwriting has introduced a new set of problems that are just as serious — and in some ways more dangerous — than the ones it was designed to solve.
The Black Box Problem
Here is what makes AI lending decisions fundamentally different from a human loan officer’s decision: you cannot ask it why.
When a traditional underwriter denies your application, there is a traceable logic. Your debt-to-income ratio was too high. You missed three payments in the last 24 months. Millions of people pay rent every month, on time, without fail, for years or even decades. This is, by any reasonable definition, proof of financial reliability. Yet in most credit scoring systems, rent payments are not factored into your credit score unless you actively opt into a rent-reporting service. The same applies to electricity bills, water bills, and mobile phone payments. These are obligations people prioritize above almost everything else because the consequences of failure are immediate and severe — losing your home or having your power cut off. The fact that these payments have historically been invisible to lenders represents one of the most glaring blind spots in the entire system.
Income Volatility and Resilience

Credit scores are brutally unsympathetic to context. A medical crisis that left someone unable to work for three months, resulting in two missed credit card payments, looks identical to the behavior of someone who spent recklessly and simply stopped caring about their obligations. A divorce. A natural disaster. A sudden job loss during a pandemic. These events can crater a credit score in ways that persist for years, long after the person has fully recovered their financial footing and demonstrated renewed responsibility. Context-aware lending — understanding why a negative event occurred, not just that it occurred — would paint a far more accurate picture of future default risk.
Character and Community Standing
This one is harder to quantify, but it is not impossible. In smaller communities, a business owner’s reputation, their history of honoring informal agreements, their relationships with suppliers and customers, all provide meaningful signal about how they will treat a formal financial obligation. Some AI systems are experimenting with ways to capture this through social and professional network data, but this approach comes with its own serious privacy and bias risks that have not been adequately resolved.
The Regulatory Gap That’s Leaving Borrowers Exposed
As AI lending has expanded rapidly, regulatory frameworks have struggled to keep pace. In the European Union, the AI Act has begun to establish accountability requirements for high-risk AI applications, and lending decisions fall into this category. In the United States, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has issued guidance requiring lenders to provide specific, accurate reasons for adverse credit decisions — but enforcement in the context of complex algorithmic systems remains difficult in practice.
India’s regulatory landscape for AI in fintech is still developing. The result is a significant accountability gap. Borrowers in most jurisdictions currently have limited rights when it comes to understanding, challenging, or correcting an AI-generated lending decision. This is not a technological problem. It is a policy failure, and it is one that disproportionately harms borrowers who are already at the margins of the formal credit system.
What Responsible AI Lending Should Look Like
The solution is not to abandon AI in lending. Used thoughtfully, AI genuinely can expand access to credit, reduce costs, and serve populations that traditional banking has systematically excluded. But responsible AI lending requires a set of commitments that many lenders have not yet made.
Explainability should be non-negotiable. Every borrower who receives an adverse decision deserves a clear, human-readable explanation of why. Not a boilerplate legal notice, but a specific account of which factors drove the decision and what the borrower could do differently. Regulators must require this, and lenders must build systems capable of providing it.
Bias auditing must be continuous, not a one-time exercise. AI models trained on historical data will drift toward historical biases unless they are actively monitored and corrected over time. Independent third-party audits of lending algorithms should be standard practice, with results made available to regulators and, in aggregate form, to the public.
Alternative data must be integrated responsibly. Using rent history, utility payments, and cash flow data to build a more complete picture of creditworthiness is genuinely promising. But lenders must be transparent about what data they are collecting, obtain meaningful consent, and rigorously test whether alternative data variables introduce new forms of bias rather than eliminating old ones.
Human oversight must remain in the loop for consequential decisions. A denied mortgage application, a rejected small business loan — these are life-altering decisions. An appeals process that places an actual human reviewer in the loop, with authority to override an algorithmic decision when context warrants it, is not a luxury. It is a basic requirement of a fair lending system.
What You Can Do Right Now

Request your credit report regularly and dispute any inaccuracies. Errors in credit files are more common than most people realize, and a single erroneous entry can meaningfully damage your score. In India, you are entitled to one free CIBIL report per year. Use it.
Opt into rent and utility reporting services where they are available. Some platforms and lenders now offer the ability to have your regular payments reported to credit bureaus, building your file without taking on new debt.
Build a documented financial history even outside formal credit. Keep records of consistent savings, regular bill payments, and income patterns. If you are applying for a loan from a fintech lender using alternative data, having organized financial documentation strengthens your application.
